Mira Cabernet Sauvignon Schweizer Vineyard 2017

Mira Cabernet Sauvignon Schweizer Vineyard 2017

Hints of violet, cigar box, and eucalyptus meet rich blackberry and bay leaf aromas, segue into intense and complex layers of black currants and dried herbs on the palate. Smooth despite tremendous structure, the wine’s savory black fruit character underlies layers of iron and crushed rock.

95 Points - Wine Enthusiast - CELLAR SELECTION - "This bold, ripe-tasting and quite tannic wine needs plenty of time to show its best side. Deep black cherry and black-currant flavors are accented by smoky, cedary oak notes, and backed by a full body and firm texture. Subtle accents of cedar, cloves and iron add to its complexity. Best from 2027–2040. Cellar Selection. —J.G."

94 Points - The Wine Independent - "Deep garnet-purple in color, the single-varietal 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon Schweizer Vineyard opens with evolving notes of prunes, tobacco leaf, and blackcurrant pastilles, plus suggestions of incense, new leather, and fallen leaves. The full-bodied palate is packed with maturing black fruits, supported by grainy tannins and lovely tension, finishing long with an herbal lift. - Lisa Perrotti-Brown"

93 Points - Robert Parker Wine Advocate - "The 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon Schweizer Vineyard spent 30 months in 100% new French oak, resulting in plenty of cedary, cola-like accents to the ripe cherry fruit. It's medium to full-bodied, with that plush, velvety-silky Stags Leap District texture perfectly nailed. Sticklers might wish for a slightly longer finish and additional complexity, but this is a beauty."

90 Points - James Suckling - "Aromas of dark cherries, strawberries and white pepper follow through to a medium-bodied palate, full of juicy plums and cherries. Savory, bright and drinkable, though slightly light at the end.— JS"

Vineyard Notes
Schweizer Vineyard, one of the oldest in Napa Valley, has been producing grapes for premier wines for over 100 years and has been owned by the Schweizer family since 1956. This small 42 acre vineyard in the heart of Stags Leap District brings together some of the best soils and the perfect microclimate for growing Cabernet Sauvignon. The combination of excellent draining Perkins Gravelly Loam soil, the guarantee of great afternoon sun due to its position on the east side of the valley and ideal hot days and cool nights secure that Schweizer Vineyard is among the world’s top locations to grow Cabernet Sauvignon.
Vintage Notes
Vintage 2014 is best remembered as the year of the big, Napa centered earthquake. This occurred in August, at a time most wineries are preparing to receive fruit if they haven’t already done so. Though wineries were impacted, the vineyards themselves suffered no damage. The months leading to harvest showed a drought tendency, with the 2013/14 season being one of the driest on record. Though rainfall was about half of normal, we received quite a bit of rain in February and March, enough to hold us over for the rest of the season. The warm Spring and dry summer resulted in smaller grapes, which typically means a higher degree in flavor concentration. Nature gave us an unexpected bounty in 2014, however another excellent vintage.
Winemaker's Notes
10 day cold maceration followed by 14 days of fermentation. Daily pumpovers during active fermentation at 88°F. 40 days total vat time in small French oak vats followed by malolactic fermentation in barrel.
